What is KEEP?

We are a teen leadership group working together with many people and companies to bring energy awareness to the community. We are installing energy consumption monitoring units into homes and are working with local schools, helping them retrofit their appliances and lighting. We've also created our website, www.keeproject.org, so that we can reach the entire community with our user friendly energy tools.

Leadership Kauai

KEEP is a project of Leadership Kauai's (www.leadershipkauai.org) Pi'ina Hoku Team Leadership program. The first class began in August 2006. The program offers up to 20 High School students throughout Kaua`i an intensive leadership experience during their Junior year in high school. The program begins with a weekend retreat at Koke`e and continues with trainings one full day each month until a closing north shore retreat in March. Graduation is in April. Pi’ina Hoku’s 2010 class has dedicated the duration of their program to educating the community on energy sustainability and appliance cost-effectiveness. KEEProject.org is one of Pi’ina Hoku’s ways of reaching the community.

Speakers and Special Guests

We send a warm Aloha and thanks to all of the guest speakers that came to talk at Pi'ina Hoku's meetings.

Quick and Easy Energy Tips:

1. Use smaller cooking appliances instead of large ovens (microwaves, toasters etc.)

2. Use appliances after 8pm(residential areas consume the most energy from 6-8pm, try to smooth out the curve.)

3. Set up a rain barrel to collect water that runs off your roof. In about one inch of rain, you can collect up to 700 gallons of water! You can use that water to water plants or wash cars!

4. Use front loading washing machines (these use 1/3 less water, energy and detergent!)

5. Prevent phantom loads (appliances still use energy when they’re off!) by unplugging needless electronics.

6. Turn down your air conditioner. (A few degrees saves a lot of energy!)
